Paderborn
A town in northwestern Germany, a member of the Hanseatic League during the Middle Ages. In a technical sense, it can be considered as the site of the birth of the Holy Roman Empire; Charlemagne and Pope Leo III met here in 799, to discuss the future of the Frankish state.
