PRAGUE (Praha) Capital and largest city of the Czech Republic, one of the truly great European cities, founded in the mid 9th century and an important center thereafter. The Bishopric established here at the beginning of the Bohemian Kingdom became an Archbishopric in 1344.

  40. vacant - in the mid to late 15th century, and early to mid 16th century, Bohemia was dominated by a non-Catholic sect, the Hussites which predates the Lutheran Reformation by about 100 years. After lengthy negotiations amid much violence, Jan Rokyczana became the leader of an independent Czech church which endured until the 1620's. No Roman hierarchy were able to assume office here until Bohemia became a Habsburg territory (1526), at which time Roman Catholicism was reintroduced under Imperial aegis.
